    About the Role Full‑time, permanent position in the Process Automation Department of a world‑class computer integrated manufacturing facility. The role supports and improves advanced control systems and optimization functions across complex manufacturing operations.

    Key Responsibilities

    Develop and maintain advanced modelling, control and optimization software and systems for manufacturing operations.

    Continuously improve modelling, control and optimization software to increase efficiency and productivity.

    Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to integrate these systems with existing automation infrastructure, equipment and processes.

    Identify opportunities for advanced modelling/optimization solutions to improve business results.

    Build in‑depth knowledge of automation technologies, functions, and manufacturing/business processes.

    Accountabilities

    Identify, develop, and implement improvements to automation software functions and systems.

    Analyze manufacturing processes to find new automation opportunities.

    Monitor, support and troubleshoot automation software to ensure optimal performance.

    Work independently and collaboratively with co‑workers and leadership.

    Close knowledge gaps through training and knowledge transfer.

    Develop a network of working relationships.

    Manage assigned work.

    Desired Skills & Experience

    Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Engineering, Mathematics or Statistics (or related quantitative discipline).

    Specialization in advanced control systems, optimization, statistics and/or machine learning; experience in R, MATLAB, Julia or Python.

    Direct experience with object‑oriented programming (C++, C#, Java) and relational database skills (e.g., Oracle SQL).

    Experience with mathematical optimization techniques (LP, MIP, etc.) and meta‑heuristics.

    Formal software training a plus but not required.

    Strong analytical and rapid learning skills.

    Effective teamwork and communication.

    Excellent problem‑solving and creative thinking.

    Results‑oriented mindset with initiative.

    Work Environment

    Combination of office and manufacturing environment.

    Required to wear personal safety equipment in the plant.

    Exposure to dust, chemicals, temperature changes, noise and large industrial equipment.

    Hours of Work

    Monday through Friday with extended hours as needed to meet project deadlines.

    Flexibility to determine workday start and end times to fit personal needs.

    Manufacturing Applications Engineer – Process Automation Department – Permanent Position | Hamilton, ON ArcelorMittal Dofasco operates a world-class computer-integrated manufacturing facility. The Process Automation Department is responsible for large-scale, high-impact manufacturing application systems integral to production—from raw materials to finished products.

    Who are we looking for? We are seeking an experienced, outcomes-driven Manufacturing Applications Engineer to own and improve plant-critical manufacturing applications and OT-enabled information systems. This role is ideal for someone who can bridge operations and technology, translate production needs into practical solutions, and drive reliable execution through cross-functional teams and vendors.

    The successful candidate’s position title (Sr. Analyst / Specialist / Sr. Specialist) will be based on qualifications and experience.

    Key Responsibilities

    Own the lifecycle of manufacturing applications and OT systems: requirements, delivery, sustainment, and continuous improvement.

    Partner with Operations, Maintenance, Quality, and Engineering to identify high-value enhancements, define scope, and prioritize work.

    Support system integration across OT platforms (automation interfaces, historians, databases, reporting/analytics, and application-to-application interfaces).

    Improve system reliability through disciplined incident/problem management, root-cause analysis, and prevention of repeat failures.

    Coordinate vendors and internal teams through implementation, testing, commissioning support, and stabilization.

    Maintain strong operational practices: change management, documentation, standards, backup/restore readiness, and cybersecurity alignment.

    Contribute to team capability building through knowledge sharing and mentoring.

    Desired Skills & Experience

    Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering discipline (Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Physics, Computer, or related).

    Demonstrated experience supporting or leading work in an industrial/manufacturing environment with OT systems and plant-critical applications.

    Strong troubleshooting skills: structured problem investigation, risk assessment, and practical mitigation.

    Ability to manage competing priorities and communicate clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

    Technical familiarity with manufacturing/OT environments (e.g., industrial automation concepts, data collection, historians, databases, interfaces).

    A solid foundation in software development is needed to be effective in this role, although advanced development is not the primary focus (e.g., scripting, SQL, configuration, basic coding).

    Work Environment

    Office and industrial setting in production areas when necessary.

    Work Expectations

    Days, Monday–Friday with extended hours to cover project deadlines and peak workloads as required.

    Flexible start / end times

    Paid on-call rotation.

    The salary range for this position is $66,000 - $114,000. Starting salary will depend on the successful candidate’s qualifications and work experience.

    Company paid Defined Contribution Pension Plan. No employee contribution required. With employer contributions between 5 and 10%.
