About the Role:
CASA Mental Health Classrooms are CASA's new model for school-based mental health service. The program addresses the need for services closer to students by bridging a child's mental health and school needs, through a coordinated approach by a mental health team and a teacher. CASA Classrooms are delivered in partnership with the Government of Alberta, community partners and school divisions. This role follows the school year schedule, running from August to June.
The Mental Health Nurse will:
Work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team to provide and coordinate services such as nursing assessments, plans of care, medication administration, teaching, telephone follow-up and health promotion.
Complete appropriate nursing assessments (physical and psychosocial) to identify mental health concerns and current risks. This includes:
Incorporating objective findings such as laboratory results, diagnostic findings, specialist reports and past history.
Integrating assessment and other data to establish appropriate long and short-term goals, and providing nursing interventions to promote, maintain and restore health.
Monitor, evaluate and modify nursing care plans based on effectiveness of interventions and/or changes in condition or environment, in collaboration with the patient and care team.
Provide information and instructions to assist others in understanding the clinical condition, ongoing care and management.
Provide relevant medication teaching.
Assist with individual or group therapy.
Liaise with other professionals to promote continuity of care and assists families with connecting to a primary care physician.
Act as a resource by providing training to team members to assist in their professional development, and participating in the development of children's mental health teaching and resource materials.
Identify service delivery improvements and suggest enhancements with the lens of evidence-informed practice and CASA's strategic and operational plans.
Regularly work with the team, Program Manager and Senior Clinical Operations Manager to gather information and implement any required improvements to clinical processes.
Practice according to the code of ethics and practice standards of their specific nursing college.
Help identify evaluation measures and outcomes in consultation with the Program Manager.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in nursing.
A minimum of three to five years of recent pediatric experience in an ambulatory care setting which has included the care and management of children with mental health problems. Acute care experience in children's mental health would be an asset.
Must be a member in good standing with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta or College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta.
Knowledge of the Health Information and Protection of Privacy Information Acts in addition to professional organization's ethics and standards of practice.
Respect for and understanding of confidentiality, and an ability to maintain confidentiality regarding personal and sensitive information.
Familiarity with electronic medical records or similar information systems.
Ability to apply theoretical knowledge in a clinical setting, utilize relevant research findings in daily nursing practice, identify barriers and facilitate solution development, and to work independently and within a team to prioritize work activities.
Commitment to continuous quality improvement and engaging in continuous learning opportunities for personal and professional growth.
Ability to make evidence-based decisions, work across programs and services, and to work and communicate in a cooperative, respective manner with all staff.
Knowledge of family therapy and group therapy is an asset.

Help caregivers with children who have exceptional needs build specialized parenting skills. Formulate diagnoses as appropriate, using the DSM-5-TR and other diagnostic tools. Conduct case management functions, including convening case conferences and liaising with CASA therapists and psychiatrists, community services and other professionals involved with the child and their family. Coordinate consultation with others therapists or external partners as appropriate. Supervise and/or precept student placements. Contribute to staff knowledge and understanding of discipline-specific issues.
Qualifications Master’s degree in psychology, social work or occupational therapy, or, a bachelor’s degree in social work or a related discipline such as psychology or social sciences, with a minimum of three years of related experience in an educational or mental health setting. Active registration and in good standing with Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW), College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP) or Alberta College of Occupational Therapists (ACOT). A minimum of two years of clinical practice in child and family mental health and/or youth addictions. Valid Class 5 driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
