About this role The incumbent will prepare professional commercial proposals for a broad range of ESS customers. This role will lead discussions with customers to understand their specific applications and needs. The incumbent will act as a technical expert in ESS and participate in customer presentations, to help educate customers about our products and solutions. About this role We are seeking a highly skilled Test Engineer to join our Energy Storage Solutions Team based in Brampton, ON, Canada. The ideal candidate will have a robust background in electronics power conversion (including Li-Ion batteries) and experience with power generation and power distribution. The primary responsibilities will include testing, validating and qualifying Batteries Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to ensure they meet industry standards and performance specifications. This role will also provide training to test and field service technicians as required.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
Test Planning and Execution: Develop and execute comprehensive test plans for BESS (50 kVA ó 1,500 kVA / 2 hours ó 4+ hours), including functional, performance, safety, EMC and reliability testing. Contribute to validate and challenge the test plans with National Recognized Testing Laboratories if applicable. Evaluate, if applicable and time saving, alternative testing solution like Hardware In the Loop (HIL) and Software In The Loop (SIL). Build the scheduling and identify the needed resources. Ensure tests cover all necessary specifications and standards.
Tests bay set-up: Coordinate the systems, testing equipment (load banks / source simulators) and measurements devices installation on the tests bay. Ensure the setting of all the systems controllers (PMS, PCS and BMS) and measurement devices. Verify the calibration of measurements devices.
Functional Testing: Ensure that the BESS functions correctly according to its design specifications. This involves testing various operational modes such as Grid Tied mode and Grid Islanded mode in association with other generators (PV / Genset) and loads (resistive, inductive and capacitive).
Performance Testing: Conduct performance tests to validate the efficiency, energy capacity, energy quality response times and operational stability. This includes testing under various conditions such as different P/Q set-points, capacity scenario, load scenarios, temperature variations, and voltage/frequency disturbances.
Compliance Testing: Verify that the system complies with safety standards and regulations, including electrical safety, fire safety, and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements. Ensure BESS comply with relevant industry standards, including: IEEE 1547 / UL1741 / CA Rule 21 / UL 3141 / UL 9540 / NFPA 855, 68, 69 & 72 / IFC & BFC / FCC Part 15 / IEEE 2030.5 Document and report compliance test results.
Troubleshooting and Issue Resolution: Investigate and troubleshoot any issues encountered during testing. Identify root causes and work with design and engineering teams to develop and implement effective solutions.
Documentation: Prepare detailed test reports, including means, tools, methodologies, results, and any identified issues or deviations. Gather documents (Tests report / certificates / MSD / …) of purchased subassemblies like the batteries. Provide clear and concise documentation for internal and external stakeholders.
Continuous Improvement: Stay updated on the latest trends and advancements in BESS technology and testing methodologies. Implement best practices to enhance testing processes and improve product quality.
Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, design, engineering, certification and quality assurance, to ensure thorough testing validation, qualification and certification of BESS.
Support: Communicate with marketing, projects management and services team to provide required test reports. Provide input for projects management and services team support, including resolving technical issues and offering guidance on product use.
Essential Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skills: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. Minimum 5 years of experience in compliance/certification of power conversion products, lithium-ion batteries and management systems (EMS / PMS / Microgrid controllers). Experience with EMI troubleshooting. Proven experience in testing and validating power electronics, particularly BESS. Strong understanding of industry standards and compliance requirements for BESS. Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex issues effectively. Strong documentation and communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Ability to travel to international destinations and maintain a valid passport for international travel.
