Partner with Product, Design, and Engineering to discover and validate customer needs and technical approaches

Prototype quickly, and as necessary, to de‑risk projects, test assumptions, and iterate ideas into production‑ready solutions

Consistently deliver incremental value by anticipating dependencies, breaking down work, and regularly demoing progress

Communicate technical trade‑offs, present system design proposals clearly, and document architectural decisions

Apply modern software engineering practices to deliver robust, maintainable, and extensible systems

Uplevel teammates through code reviews, pairing, and strong collaboration

Take ownership of your code and product domain, engaging in retrospectives and continuously improving how the team works

Motivated by mission‑driven work and excited to improve public transit

5+ years of relevant software engineering experience

Experience building real‑time data processing systems

Comfort applying modern AI tools to accelerate development and improve quality

Full‑stack skills: strong in at least one of Java, Python, or Node/JavaScript; comfortable building modern frontends (Vue.js a plus); eager to learn across the stack

Experience building and consuming APIs; proficiency with SQL and non‑relational databases, including making informed schema and data‑modeling decisions

Experience with cloud‑native architectures and services (AWS preferred)

Strong product mindset — you use technology pragmatically to solve meaningful customer problems

Continuous learner who embraces emerging technologies and helps others grow

Collaborative team player who contributes wherever needed to support team goals

Open to feedback (a core Swiftly value!), humble in technical debate, and committed to blameless learning and improvement

Engineering at Swiftly Engineering at Swiftly is not only about writing code – we believe in creating empowered product teams that work together to conceptualize new features and bring them to life. Each team aims to strike a balance between delivering incremental improvements, creating prototypes to test new ideas and mitigate risks, and building scalable software using industry best practices. We’re guided by a mission to positively impact transit riders, and we embrace humility and intentionality in how we make technical decisions so that we best meet our customers’ needs.

The Role Swiftly is looking for an Engineering Manager to lead a cross‑functional product team that builds the real‑time operational tools transit agencies rely on every day. Your team owns Live Operations (a real‑time, map‑based dispatch dashboard), GPS Playback (historical trip analysis), and an expanding suite of communication and coordination capabilities that connect dispatchers, operators, and field supervisors.

We seek Engineering Managers who are curious about problems to solve and orient toward impact by being flexible in their specific contributions to help their team succeed. You will be responsible for growing and supporting a high‑performing team, driving delivery of complex web‑based products, and ensuring your engineers have the context, support, and technical direction they need to do their best work. You should bring deep familiarity with modern web technologies, real‑time data systems, and map‑based applications — enough to guide architectural decisions, mentor engineers, and engage credibly in technical discussions.

The team is at an exciting inflection point: sustaining and improving established products that agencies depend on daily while building new capabilities that will define how transit operations teams communicate, coordinate, and resolve issues in real time. You'll need to balance these priorities, collaborate closely with partner teams, and help the team navigate the transition from early‑stage features to scalable, enterprise‑ready products.

We encourage you to apply if you meet half or more of the requirements and are excited to learn about the rest. Above all else, we value candidates with a growth mindset, the aptitude to learn, and strong motivation to deliver impact to customers. If this is exciting to you, we'd love to talk!

    * We use AI tools for scheduling and summarization in our hiring process. We do not use AI tools to make decisions about who moves forward or to assess the strength of candidates. Every application is reviewed and all hiring decisions are made by Swiftly team members. This is an active, open role that we are currently hiring for at Swiftly.

    What you’ll do

Partner with the team's Product Manager, Designer, and Engineers to understand customer needs, define impactful solutions, set milestones and goals, and deliver valuable products to market.

Facilitate technical discovery, translating rapid learning into product designs and guiding engineers as plans solidify.

Guide the team to balance technical excellence with rapid delivery, evolving practices as products scale.

Proactively seek feedback and communicate progress, learnings, and blockers to drive alignment across teams.

Manage team members with a focus on enabling a supportive, inclusive, growth‑oriented, and outcome‑focused culture on the team.

Balance investment across sustaining established products and delivering new capabilities, adjusting priorities as the team's product portfolio evolves.

Stay apprised of developments in AI tooling, capturing improvements that drive efficiency and effectiveness of the team as product development evolves.

Collaborate with partner product teams to ensure cohesive cross‑team solutions, particularly where your team's products integrate with mobile, embedded, and backend systems.

Create an environment where your direct reports are proud to work at Swiftly, as measured by employee retention and employee satisfaction scores.

What will set you up for success

3+ years of experience in engineering team leadership and people management, with a track record of developing engineers and building high‑performing teams.

Proven experience guiding teams toward outcomes and delivering end‑to‑end products in cloud‑based SaaS environments.

Broad experience across the stack (frontend, backend, data). Bonus if you have experience with AWS, JavaScript/Vue.js, Postgres, Java.

Familiarity with real‑time data systems, including technologies like WebSockets, pub/sub architectures, or streaming data pipelines.

Experience with map‑based or geospatial web applications is a strong plus (e.g., MapLibre, Mapbox, Leaflet).

Comfortable applying modern AI tools and techniques in the software development lifecycle to accelerate development.

Strong ability to support team execution by clarifying goals, breaking down work effectively, and managing competing priorities across multiple product surfaces.

You seek and internalize feedback (a core Swiftly value!) and approach technical debates with humility.

You are excited to be part of a mission‑driven company improving public transit. Regardless of your why, it is important that you care about the work we do.
