Acting as part of the team, they ensure operations are efficient, safe, and secure. The Resident Support Worker shall also ensure residents safety while interacting in a positive, supportive manner. They will provide practical support to help socially re-integrate them into the community and support in the community.Accountabilities: Resident Care and Support:Actively supervises and supports residents in the facility and in the community as required in a lawful, safe, and expedient manner. Coordinates resident care relating to security issues; performs bed checks and room/personal searches.Monitors the activities of the residents and maintain availability for personal, practical, and moral support. May assist with planning as well as implement, monitor, and participate in group activities, including social recreational programming and life-skills training modules to help residents reintegrate to healthy community as well as deal with various issues.Occasionally defuses conflicts dealing with incidents and crisis in a safe manner. Develops rapport with residents and utilizes the environment (milieu) in assessing, teaching, and supporting residents around various issues and questions such as problem-solving, conflict resolution, and wellbeing.Participates in development and implementation of case plans. Reports to Program Supervisor client progress, changes and/or regression in the client's status. Completes duties, occurrence reports, and logs as per shift description and accurately records day-to-day happenings using appropriate methods.Following standardized procedures, liaises with referral sources and other external agencies as needed (e.g., Regina Drug Treatment Court, Community Corrections, Probation Services, CPS, Regina Housing, Ministry of Social Services, SIS worker, SAID worker; police; EMS; urgent situations; pharmacy).Refers clients to outside resources and counseling when needed. Encourages residents to develop community-based support networks, in conjunction with the Program Supervisor or designate.Answers the program department telephone and records/remits messages.Follows policies and procedures of Waterston Ministries, The Salvation Army, and the funder.Health & Safety:Communicate and enforce facility rules while maintaining discipline and safety. Oversee the programs when senior staff aren't on the premises when assigned.Maintains the safety and security needs of the residents through engagement, support, supervision, and monitoring.Supervises the delivery of medication and ensures residents are provided with appropriate medical attention as required. Maintains a high level of client care and completes duties in the facility such as cleanliness of program and office space. May participate as an active member of the Joint Health & Safety Committee. Communication and Reporting:Completes all documentation in regard to client safety, incident reports, fire safety, and other serious incidents.Documents daily events, progress towards goals, and any significant occurrences.Maintains strictest confidentiality regarding the residents, their issues, and their concerns.Team ParticipationParticipates in all team meetings.Presents concerns, questions, and issues in prescribed forums.Works co-operatively as a team member and provides a coordinated and consistent approach to residents.Provides input into decisions regarding admissions and discharges from the program.Participates as required in the evaluation and goal-setting processes of the organization.Other work-related duties as assigned.CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENTGovernance Boards and Councils: NoneInternal: Director of Resident Services, Program Supervisor, residents, staff members.External: Regina Drug Treatment Court, Regina Housing Authority, Addictions Services Regina, Pine Grove Correction Centre, Child Protection Services, Ministry of Social Services and other government partners, community partners, health professionals. MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY:Reports directly to: Kate's Place Program Supervisor. No direct reports for this position May show others how to perform certain procedures.FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT: Collection of Resident Occupancy Fees, use of Moneris Terminal.Minimal material responsibility.Responsible for the safekeeping of materials and equipment for own use. Does not process any financial transactions.WORKING CONDITIONSWork setting is at Kate's Place which is a Residential facility. Occasional travel to and from scheduled and unscheduled appointments (5% travel). May travel to appointments with residents.Some unscheduled overtime maybe associated with this position. Works rotational shifts. The incumbent will/may work under the following disagreeable conditions:Dealing with angry and highly emotional residents and their families. May encounter verbal abuse.May involve bending, stretching, reaching, and climbing.Minimal opportunities for rest breaks may occur during the shift.May involve sitting, standing, walking for long periods of time.Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.The above responsibilities must be performed in keeping with The Salvation Army's Mission, Vision and Values, in a professional manner, upholding our code of conduct. education and experience Qualifications: Education, Qualifications and Certifications: Completion of high school is required.Completion of a formal post-secondary/college diploma program of 2 academic years in Social Service Work, and/or Mental Health & Addictions is a strong assetCPR First Aid (C).Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certicate or willingness to obtain. Current Drivers licence and driving abstract would be an asset.Completion of Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST).Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements A minimum of 11 months of prior related experience in a residential setting working with marginalized clientele with a strong focus on mental health support. Experience working within the field of Mental Health and Addictions is preferred. Demonstrated understanding of the Behaviour Based Model.Understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities. Staff will support each person by encouraging healthy life skills and choices, so each person can experience success in moving back into the community and out of the shelter systems. The staff for this relief position will have the option to work in both the men's or the women's shelter/transitional housing or exclusively in one or the other.Accountabilities: 1. Resident/Program Support:Handles the admission, orientation, and evaluation of residents as per policies, procedures, and guidelines.Ensures ongoing enforcement of policies and guidelines, including providing guidance to residents.Conducts respectful resident intake interviews ensuring all information is obtained, recorded, expectations are clearly communicated to residents, and basic goal setting is done.Monitors all incoming traffic ensuring including verifying resident identification and following safety protocols.Liaises with Spiritual and Religious Care team members, internal referral sources and other external agencies as needed (e.g., welfare, police, parole, urgent situations, DOAP Team, PACT Team and non-emergency.)Stores and records information on resident medication, tools and gear, as per policies and procedures.Performs light housekeeping duties and foster a clean workplace culture.Provides linen and assistance to each resident, as needed.Receives all resident concerns in a professional manner, directs residents to avenues of resolution and ensure required documentation is completed.Ensures that calls and messages for residents are dealt with as per policy and privacy legislation.Works with program team members to ensure best practices and efficient service delivery.Provides mediation in resident conflict to prevent and/or resolve altercations.Monitors late passes and address non-compliance.Ensures all policies and procedures are upheld and, if required, seek additional support internally or externally from Calgary Police Services or Emergency Medical Services.Provides and reprograms resident identification cards as per program guidelines.Reviews policies, procedures, and program guideline; provides suggestions for changes, as needed.Reviews information and resident forms to ensure correct information and relevance.May carry out inspection/safety and wellness checks of property and grounds in accordance with policies and procedures.May provide support for other program positions.2. Administrative: Accurately records day-to-day happenings using appropriate methods; maintain logbooks, and complete occurrence reports, etc.May handle finances relating to occupancy fees, meal tickets, and receipts of same.Communicates with co-workers and Resident Support Team Leaders at shift change, to ensure bed availability; review and record all resident information.Reads all day-to-day communications.Records all pertinent information and any significant events in communication book.Completes program documentation as per program procedures, including meal lists, communication book, occupancy fee receipts, behaviour contracts, notices, incident reports, emergency evacuation reports, and TPW reports.Attends program staff meetings as scheduled.Demonstrates stewardship of The Salvation Army resources such as time keeping and program supplies.Assists at the laundromat and with Program Aid duties, as needed (Men's Shelter).Assists with linen laundry as needed (Women's Shelter).May attend case conferences when necessary.3. Record Keeping and Reports:Maintains daily and monthly program statistics.Assists Resident Support Team Leader with weekly tool and medication cabinet audits.Coordinates, records, and distributes weekly food hampers.Prepares required incident reports.Files previous year's inactive files and archive files annually.May audit resident files as per procedure and accreditation standards.WORKING CONDITIONS: This is a casual position. Hours of work will be on an as-needed-basis. Please note that there is no guarantee of hours, either per shift or per month, as hours of work are variable and will be determined by The Salvation Army in its sole discretion.Works in a men's residential housing facility or women's shelter.May have to deal with aggressive people. Potential for verbal, and less likely physical, attacks.Hours may vary; work schedule affecting lifestyleExposure to infectious diseasesExposure to bodily fluidsEducation and Experience Qualifications: Education, Qualifications and Certifications: Completed High school diploma, plus specialized courses of up to six (6) months.Police Information Check (PIC) with Vulnerable Sector SearchCurrent Standard First Aid certification with Level A or C CPR from an Alberta approved training provider.Incumbents with a Social Work diploma or degree must be registered with the Alberta College of Social WorkersExperience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements More than three months but less than one year of prior related experience, including experience with frontline work in a social service setting.Skills and Capabilities: Strong customer service skills.Attentive listening and observation of body language and able to monitor and read the environment.Able to stay calm in stressful situations.Computer skills including MS Outlook, Word and ability to use keyboard; familiarity with databases.Demonstrated trauma informed care, non-violent crisis intervention and de-escalation skills.Able to pack and life resident belongings.Able to stand for long periods of time and do walk abouts within and outside of the building; able to walk up and down stairs.Able to continuously monitor the environment, monitoring security cameras and attentiveness when interacting with clients and recording information.
