    Overview The University of Calgary is located on the traditional territories of the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta. The Department of Clinical Neurosciences at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, in partnership with the Hotchkiss Brain Institute and the McCaig Bone and Joint Institute, invites applications for a Contingent Term appointment for a neurosurgery spine specialist at the Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor level. Responsibilities Provide exceptional clinical care in adult spine surgery and participate in acute care coverage for spine surgery, as well as occasionally for adult general neurosurgery. Collaborate with an established spine program comprising four other neurosurgeons and eight orthopedic surgeons, all focused on spine surgery, and work in a multidisciplinary setting with neurosurgery, neurology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, social work, and orthotics. Participate in teaching residents, clinical and research fellows, medical students, and graduate students. Engage in academic activity with protected time negotiated based on track record and academic plan. Contribute to start-up funding discussions and participate in the development of an academic plan and research program. May involve start date between July 1, 2026 and September 30, 2026 (negotiable). Qualifications MD and Canadian Royal College specialist certification in Neurosurgery or equivalent. Dedicated clinical fellowship in adult spine surgery with independent competence across disease presentations (may be in progress but must be completed before commencing). Eligible for licensure in the Province of Alberta. Strong track record of scholarly activity, including 12 or more peer-reviewed publications within the last ten years, with some (preferably most) related to spine disease. Associate Professor level: evidence of an established externally peer-reviewed funded spine research program (Tri-Council or equivalent), a publication record of original research studies including senior or first author manuscripts, teaching/graduate supervision experience, and engagement in professional communities. Professor level: evidence of a continuous externally funded, well-established spine research program, outstanding publication record in high impact journals or leadership in the field, ability to lead research teams, strong teaching and supervision record, and evidence of academic service/leadership. Appointment details The successful candidate will join the Section of Neurosurgery at the University of Calgary and be based at Foothills Medical Center. Affiliation with the Hotchkiss Brain Institute and the McCaig Bone and Joint Institute; consideration by the appropriate clinician-scientist institute. Protected time for academic activity negotiated based on track record and academic plan. Salary support through an Academic Medicine Health Services Plan (AMHSP) supported by Alberta Health, Alberta Health Services, and the Cumming School of Medicine.
