Junior Geotechnical Engineer

Our multidisciplinary expertise allows us to work on problems related to earth, the environment and construction materials. We solve problems in a wide variety of industries including transportation, building construction, municipal infrastructure, land development, dams and water resources, industrial development, mining, oil and gas, marine and environmental services.
As our Junior Geotechnical Engineer, you will work on varied projects and develop your skills with guidance and mentorship from our senior team.
Responsibilities
Work outside on field assessments including mapping, material testing, investigations, and site meetings.
Plan, coordinate and manage geotechnical aspects of design and construction projects to meet our client needs and maintain Thurber’s safety and quality standards.
Coordinate and execute field programs for geotechnical assessments, including field investigations and logging of soil and rock for infrastructure, foundation design, natural hazards, etc.
Oversee installation and implementation of geotechnical instrumentation monitoring programs
Work with contractors and owners of construction projects
Review construction activities and support testing of geotechnical materials.
Work in the office on analysis and design tasks such as; slope stability, data compilation, review, and interpretation of laboratory data.
Prepare and write proposals and technical reports.
Manage assigned tasks/projects, schedule, and budgets.
Qualifications and Assets
0 to 5 years of relevant experience in the Geotechnical Engineering field and an undergraduate and/or graduate degree in Civil or Geological Engineering.
Previous relevant experience working within Western Canada an asset.
Eligibility for registration with the Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia.
Class 5 driver’s license
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Strong understanding soil mechanics.
Experience in the interpretation and utilization of aerial photographs, satellite and LiDAR imagery and GIS is an asset.
Experience involving 2D and 3D geotechnical software packages such as RocScience is desirable.
Base Salary Range
$70,000 - $100,000 per year, based on a 40-hour work week.

As our Geotechnical Engineer, you will work on varied projects and develop your skills with guidance and mentorship from our senior team.
Responsibilities
Geotechnical investigations, structural design, instrumentation and analysis of cut-and-cover, mined and mechanized tunnels;
Design of temporary portal shoring, including concrete tangent piles, and soil nailing;
Directionally drilled pipeline crossings design;
Assessment of stability, surface settlements and damage to structures;
Preparation of Geotechnical Baseline Reports.
Evaluation of dewatering, grouting, ground freezing, TBM selection, vibrations due to blasting, seismic design aspects and rehabilitation of old tunnels.
Provide technical support and leadership on projects and for staff, including conducting technical reviews of calculations and analyses, as well as performing technical analyses where appropriate;
Provide guidance, and where necessary, support in coordination, preparation of cost estimates, tender submissions, technical documentation, client reports, progress reports, project scheduling / resourcing, and meeting deadlines and budgets on projects;
Scoping projects and assisting in the preparation of proposals;
Supporting mentoring, coaching and training of staff;
Work with the Branch Manager in the development of new business opportunities;
Establishing, developing, promoting and maintaining relationships with clients;

We undertake challenging assignments that can include steep terrain, deep foundations, compressible soils, landslides, contamination, or other complications.
As our Geotechnical Engineer, you will work on varied projects and develop your skills with guidance and mentorship from our senior team.
Responsibilities
Coordinate and carry out surface and subsurface site investigations, including borehole logging, sampling of soil and rock and geological mapping;
Coordinate and carry out field inspection of construction works and material testing of geotechnical materials;
Prepare and write proposals and technical reports;

Qualifications and Assets

Thurber provides geotechnical, environmental and construction materials engineering and testing services for a variety of industries across Canada. Our multidisciplinary expertise allows us to work on problems related to earth, the environment and construction materials. We solve problems in a wide variety of industries including transportation, building construction, municipal infrastructure, land development, dams and water resources, industrial development, mining, oil and gas, marine and environmental services.
As our Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer, you will work on varied projects and develop your skills with guidance and mentorship from our senior team.
Responsibilities
Coordinating and carrying out geotechnical investigations and supervising implementation of geotechnical designs and other construction monitoring services;
Undertake analysis and design tasks, summarize, review, and interpret laboratory data;
Overseeing installation of geotechnical instrumentation as well as routine monitoring of instrumentation;
Scoping projects and assisting in the preparation of proposals as necessary;
Provide mentoring, coaching, and training of staff;
Establishing, developing, promoting, and maintaining relationships with Clients and contractors; and,
Potentially manage projects and lead multidisciplinary teams.
Required Qualifications
Completion of a post-secondary program in Civil or Geological Engineering;
Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in the Geotechnical or Geological Engineering field. Local Canadian experience is strongly preferred;
Experienced with field investigation techniques such as soil logging (auger drilling, sonic drilling, etc.), SPT, and CPT;
Experience with construction monitoring. Comfortable working in a variety of environments, including local and remote construction sites;
Valid Class 5 Drivers license;
Comfortable driving mid to full-sized pickup trucks in urban, rural, and construction environments;
Proficiency with spoken and written English language is required; and,
Membership with APEGA and/or EGBC.
Other Desirable Attributes
Graduate Degree (Masters or higher);
Professional Designation (P.Eng.) with APEGA and/or EGBC;
Experienced in the use of commercial geotechnical analytical software packages, such as GEO-STUDIO, Plaxis, Soilvision, Settle3D, LPile, etc.;
Familiar with geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring;
Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills;
Strong computer skills (i.e. spreadsheet and word-processing); and,
Ability to work independently and cooperate with a team in various environment.
