    Position Overview Calian Operational and Training Technologies Solutions (COTTS), formerly SimFront Simulation Systems, is an Ottawa based company dedicated to delivering simulation related products and software development services to the military and defence sector. We are seeking an intermediate Java developer to join our operations and training technology team for a full‑time employee position. The successful candidate will work closely with senior developers designing, developing, testing, maintaining and deploying Java based applications for use in military training and operations. This position is currently a hybrid role requiring up to three days a week in the office. Responsibilities Develop and document requirements. Design external interfaces. Create high‑level and low‑level software designs. Contribute to implementation, integration, and testing of the software. Develop and perform tests. Interact with customers as directed. Work as part of a team, providing and receiving guidance and constructive criticism. Estimate and provide feedback on schedules for assigned tasks. Perform work under minimal supervision. Handle medium complexity issues and refer only complex issues to higher‑level staff. Possess comprehensive knowledge of the technical area. Take ownership to ensure work robustly meets specified requirements. Qualifications Four‑year bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field or equivalent; OR three‑year bachelor’s degree with one year of relevant experience; OR two‑year diploma in computer technology with two years of relevant experience. 5+ years of experience in Java development. Responsibilities Storyboard EL/DL products using process and standards, prioritising content, media, learner profiles, instructional methods, and levels of knowledge. Liaise with courseware project SMEs and OPIs for content acquisition, clarification, and alignment to desired POs in accordance with the mandated TP. Advise and collaborate with the production and quality assurance teams during design, development, release, and evaluation, including learner assessment products, QC checks, verifications, and peer review. Assist the Intermediate ID in conducting QC reviews if required. Synthesize content into creative, cognitively engaging instructional design. Write assessment questions appropriate to the level of learning, matching learning objectives. Work cooperatively with multi‑disciplinary project teams including DND civilian and military personnel, interns, and other contractors. Provide advice, interpretation, and guidance, and deliver presentations on courseware or project‑related issues. Support resolution of key project‑specific issues, offering alternative strategies and approaches. Support the vision and contribute to strategies and courses of action. Support leadership on the resolution of issues. Foster positive relationships with representatives of other Sections, TEs, and Project Teams to develop broad professional knowledge. Mandatory Requirements Must have a college degree in any field. Must have a minimum of 5 years of experience in Instructional Design within the last 10 years.
